New chapter! I tried to comment on the blog, but so that I'm not a "blog member" I'm not allowed to. So I'll share my comment in here instead It's sad Violeta flashback time! It was a very interesting read, but it was indeed a very sad one. I was hoping Violeta used to have a good time at least before becoming a vampire, but it really looks like one of those situations that look nice only from the outside. Indeed living-Violeta had quite a few "frown upon" traits for that epoch (not wanting to get married nor having kids, not having a real interest in men, questioning the system), but in an epoch like that one when there was just one accepted way to live I can see how she ended up pretending to be who she was expected to (and dislike it all along).
And the vampire attack was a quite random one too, she really is a tragic character...

HermioneSims Thank you for your comment as always! Don't worry, that's intentional. I've started posting the story to Tumblr now, so I've removed the comment ability since people who read there can send Asks and people who read here can comment here. Tumblr folks love their anonymous hate / accusations, so it's just to protect my sanity : P I'm really glad you liked the chapter and I'm glad you picked up on everything as well. Violeta genuinely didn't mind that her mother wanted her to marry, since the way Violeta saw it, her mother was happily married and she wanted the same happiness for her daughter even if it's not entirely what Violeta wants. Yup, no rhyme or reason it seems, just that she was turned out of cruelty, something especially cruel within the culture of vampires. And it won't be the first time she's had her livelihood taken from her, either...

I read this chapter several days ago but didn't have the mental capacity to comment. So, here's catching up again:
I've often wondered about Violeta's life early on. Seems she didn't have a particularly bad time, just felt very confined by expectations and chaffing at traditions. Her feelings about Eugen are pretty relatable. That "I don't really want this and I don't particularly feel attracted to this guy, but I kind of like the feeling that someone finds me attractive, even if the reason why feels kind of false". Okay, that's a complicated sentence, but it's the interpretation I had of her reaction to him telling her that she's beautiful, and I've definitely had that kind of reaction to someone's attention before.
Is Eugen a bachelor or a widower? I don't think it specifies in the narrative. My first reaction, when I saw the vampire, was that she was Eugen's previous wife (either declared dead, or dumped when she became a vampire) with a jealous vengeful motive. But probably not, looks like just a random hungry vampire.

No need to apologise GlacierSnow Thank you so much for commenting and reading < 3 From the perspective of her time period, it wasn't that bad (at least, from what we see here). Steady job, reliable necessities, a caring family. Violeta's mother would seem quite bad from our POV, but for the time period she grew up in, it was a combo of A) Her mother wanted her to be as happy as she was with Vasile, and b) I think a bit of old-school female trauma essentially of 'You are not complete without a husband'. Violeta's mother has never questioned anything, presumably because it seems easier, or because she and Vasile are a surprisingly good couple, especially considering what most women were treated like back then in terms of being a wife.
YES! That is very accurately what she's feeling. It feels fake and a bit odd to her, but at the same time, she's quite receptive to his attention to some degree. She just didn't expect her mother to be like 'Great! Now marry him!' : P I don't mind answering this since it's never covered: She's just a random vampire. And I think that is a part of what made healing harder for Violeta - there was no reason for what happened other than just general cruelty. Even the worst of the antagonists we know have their reasons for what they do, but Violeta just so happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and had her life turned upside-down because of it. And Eugen is a bachelor. He's kind of same place as Violeta, never found a partner and probably considered himself too old to ever fall in love. I only just thought of that bit, though, in terms of maybe he feels the same way she does.

No chapter yet because I've been working on... Tarot cards! There are a few spoilers in terms of characters, I recommend only looking if you don't care about spoilers or if you are caught up. The full images can be looked at above, the actual cards were too big dimensionwise to post without contributing to my storage space so they are here. Hope you like them!

New chapter has been uploaded.I apologise for how long it is, but I didn't want a backstory being three chapters long. I hope you enjoy it, and sorry that some bits aren't covered in much detail - I figured Violeta would not be able to remember everything in clear detail, and also for pacing reasons.

OMG new chapter! I think Violeta's struggles come across very raw and vivid, especially to women today. So much so that Juniper is sympathising with her. Both Violeta and Juniper have some strong feelings that are destructive towards them and the people that care for them. While I think there should be room to express anger, it's not healthy to hold onto it for such a long time. I hope Clementia won't follow their sentiments or methods, and instead continue to uplift fellow women instead. Interested to see what conclusions they come to next chapter....
Beautiful as always!

I'm only on chapter two, but so far, I really appreciate the setting, anachronisms and all. The witch trials in Europe are an interesting part of history. I say "interesting" because, unfortunately, it is hard to make a call for what was going on. There were still some pockets of the old religions in Europe at the end of the Middle Ages, there was a schism in the church, and I think lots of people were suspicious of their neighbors. It's especially muddy because I don't know what criteria they used, if any, to determine if someone was guilty of witchcraft. Was it just because the woman in question was a little unorthodox? In Salem, Massachusetts, we have a clearer picture. Unfortunately, the judges allowed for spectral evidence. People would literally accuse others of being witches because they had nightmares featuring that individual. It seems obvious that visions are not proof of any crime, but the judges at the time did not seem to think so. Only a couple dozen people died in Salem, but it wrecked the town's reputation forever. It's really sad for a town that was supposed to be "a city on a hill" - a model of peace and neighborly love. If you guys are interested in early modern history, I highly recommend the game Pentiment (you can find it on Steam). It's a murder mystery that takes place in an abbey during Reformation-era Germany. Anyway, back to the story!
