Hi everyone!
Sorry I’ve been quietly lurking recently, things got busy! I hope you’re all keeping well and I can’t wait to catch up on all your stories!! 💜
As some may know, my website is a library of guides and challenges for Sims as well as my stories. One of my newest guide series next month (spoiler alert) is going to be on getting into and writing SimLit. So I thought I’d come to you for some help.
If you have any resources (self-written or otherwise, promo away) or any particular words of wisdom around finding a community or the perks of certain places for sharing/reading SimLit can you drop them below? Ideally I’d be able to point readers in the direction of not only how to write it but how to make the most of it by joining the community. I’m finding myself linking to EA Forums threads that haven’t been touched in years and it feels a little unhelpful.
Thank you in advance 🥰

Hi lizzielilyy I think it sounds like a really good idea. I know EvilBnuuy made a really detailed block post about writing Simlit. From the old forum I could refer to two threads I asked to be moved as I often returned to them. (1. A Quick Guide to Simlit - Sims Story FAQ and 2. WordPress. How to start for very beginners). They probably don't make sense anymore without illustrations, but I mention them anyway, as I assume they are still searchable and you might get some ideas from there. However, they will no longer be suitable as a link. I will also refer to our own forum thread " The joys and pains of writing" created by GlacierSnow . I take it to be a continuation of " The Art of Sims Storytelling" from the old EA Forum. It's usually a thread with a lot of comments. Maybe this thread should get its own category so it doesn't disappear between all the stories.

I have linked to the FAQ one already (thank goodness it you thought of it), I will look for the WP one as well. I agree, this forum is definitely worth linking too.

NB: On my own website I have a collection of a variation of Simlit that has inspired me over time. Perhaps some of them can be used as examples in an inspiration catalogue. I try to keep the page fairly updated. Delete dead links and add some new ones in between. I'm afraid they only refer to Sims4 pages. I call this page Treasury.

Thank you for the resources! Now, for the character interview, do you fill this out for every sim? Or only some parts? I am looking forward to the lit planning document. This will be fun!

ArielTriffic - Oh, I might have forgot to link the planning document! Here it is www.mediafire.com/file/vaq3pgk2vu8tz89/Bnuuy_SimLit_Planner.doc/fileAs for the character interview you can fill out as much and as little As you like! It depends on what you feel would be most suitable, And how much of a background you need for a character before you start writing about them.

I have found these two posts to be particularly helpful to me. They aren't "how to" resources, but they are my most re-read posts for emotional support in writing when I am feeling like I am a terrible writer, or I'm dealing with writers' block, or I just need to remind myself why I'm doing this. Manny is Just Three Toddlers in A Bathrobe by manny This post is about imposter syndrome and how that feels specifically in the context of writing simlit. Everything that Manny says in this essay is so true and so relatable for me. And reading the heartfelt comments from other simlit writers at the end (many of whom are writers I know and deeply admire) it's obvious that a lot of others experience the same thing. Why do you write? by Ruthanne Reid This post is aimed at all writers, but it's absolutely still relevant for simlit writers too. It asks writers to think about the question "why do you write?" beyond the easy responses like "because I can't not write" or "because that's who I am", and really look deep for our own motivations. Because on the bad days, when we feel so anxiety-ridden or exhausted or blocked that we can't write, those kind of glib answers don't pull enough weight to get us through. She suggests a few motivations for writing as an example, but readily admits there can be many more. I find it helpful to re-read and think about when I am really struggling.

I will add a few resources for those who write historical Simlit or who are doing the Decades Challenge. First, the Discord group "Sims Of History" is a must. It covers from ancient times to retrofuturistic. Then there's the excellent Hi Sugar Are You Rationed which is a collection of lookbooks and cc links that covers 1890 to 2000. And then there's my own, humble Tumblr account Sim 66 On Tumblr where I have 1960s lookbooks, stories and sometimes sharing my tips and background info on my writing. Please do ask questions...nobody does yet but I'm always happy to answer.

If you're looking for a little paranormal inspiration then might I recommend Our Irish Heritage. The National Museum of Ireland is collecting local ghost stories. Spooky fun.
